The Architecture of Knowledge: Science, Collecting and Display in Eighteenth-Century Naples

چکیده

Before the age of the ‘modern’ museum – understood as an institutionalized space for education and entertainment, structured according to standard criteria of classification – the passions of curiosity and wonder materialized in eclectic collections that defied the borders between art, science and nature.1 In cabinets of rarities and in Wunderkammern, mathematical instruments and fossils often shared the same space as paintings, sculptures and ancient vases. If lack of standard classification systems was characteristic of such modes of display, the accumulation and exhibition of objects was not left entirely to chance. Different notions of order informed the ways in which space was manipulated and used for display in the early modern period.2 Items were pulled together to satisfy the collector’s idiosyncrasies, yet the existence of a market of curiosities suggests less heterogeneity than one would assume.3 Although the visual representations of early cabinets of curiosities and Wunderkammern illustrate

An eighteenth-century medical-meteorological society in the Netherlands: an investigation of early organization, instrumentation and quantification. Part 1.

In many areas of the eighteenth century was a starting point for the quantification of science. It was a period in which the mania for collecting led to the first attempts in systematization and classification. This penchant for collecting was not limited to natural history specimens or curiosities. Due in part to the development of mathematical and physical instruments, which became more widel...

Mobile Objects: the Space of Shells in Eighteenthcentury France

The frequent distinction made between scientific and purely amateur collections misrepresents the specificity of the field of eighteenth-century natural history. This paper argues that the extent and the boundaries of a scientific field can be determined only within the framework of concrete historical constellations of institutions, protagonists, practices and objects. By tracing the circulati...

The in/visible women: Mariangela Ardinghelli and the circulation of knowledge between Paris and Naples in the eighteenth century.

Mariangela Ardinghelli (1730-1825) is remembered as the Italian translator of two texts by the Newtonian physiologist Stephen Hales, Haemastaticks and Vegetable Staticks. This essay shows that her role in the Republic of Letters was by no means limited to such work. At a time of increasing interest in the natural history of the areas around Naples, she became a reliable cultural mediator for Fr...

Axial and Torsional Free Vibrations of Elastic Nano-Beams by Stress-Driven Two-Phase Elasticity

Size-dependent longitudinal and torsional vibrations of nano-beams are examined by two-phase mixture integral elasticity. A new and efficient elastodynamic model is conceived by convexly combining the local phase with strain- and stress-driven purely nonlocal phases. The proposed stress-driven nonlocal integral mixture leads to well-posed structural problems for any value of the scale parameter...

Herder and Reappraising Sculpture as Tactile Art

The main objective of this essay is to re-examine the nature of sculpture and its importance among arts via retrieving and studying the relatively neglected importance of touch in the experience of this art.
